Ashlee Nicole Simpson was born on October 3, 1984. She is the younger sister of pop star Jessica Simpson and daughter of Joe and Tina Simpson. Ashlee was born in Waco, Texas and grew up near Dallas. While big sister Jessica became involved with singing at an early age, for Ashlee it was dance that was her passion. She began studying classical ballet at the age of three. At the age of eleven, Ashlee was admitted to the prestigious School of American Ballet. She was the youngest person ever admitted.
Due the pressures involved in this level of dance, Ashlee developed an eating disorder. Thankfully, she was able to get prompt treatment and made a full recovery. After Jessica received a record deal, the entire family moved to Los Angeles. While Jessica recorded her album, Ashlee began appearing in television commercials. She also went on tour with Jessica as one of her backup dancers.
Ashlee danced on tour with Jessica for three years.
Ashlee's journey into TV and film continued as she had a small role in the film "Hot Chick." She also appeared in an episode of "Malcolm in the Middle" and won a recurring role on "7th Heaven." In 2003, Ashlee worked as a VJ on MTV. She was also able to record her first song, "Just Let Me Cry" which appeared on the soundtrack for the film "Freaky Friday." Not too long after that, Ashlee got a record deal with Geffen Records.
Ashlee's first album, "Autobiography" was released in July of 2004. It debuted at number one in the United States. By September, it had been certified triple platinum. Ashlee co-wrote all the songs on the album. Her first single, "Pieces of Me" was a smash hit, not just in the US but around the world. Although the two following singles, "Shadow" and "La La" did not reach the same level as "Pieces of Me," the album ended up selling over five million copies worldwide. It was the largest debut album of a female artist that year.
At the same time her album was released, Ashlee's reality show began airing after her sister's show, "Newlyweds." The show, "The Ashlee Simpson Show" followed Ashlee while working on her music career and also showed parts of her personal life. It ran for 8 episodes in 2004 and another 10 episodes in 2005.
Also in 2004 Ashlee appeared on two Christmas albums. The first, "Radio Disney Jingle Jams" included a song entitled "Christmas Past, Present, and Future." She also appeared in a duet with sister Jessica on her "ReJoyce" Christmas album in a song titled "Little Drummer Boy." At the Teen Choice Awards she won Song of the Summer for "Pieces of Me" as well as the "Fresh Face" Award. She also took home "New Female Artist of the Year" at the Billboard Music Awards.
Despite her many successes, 2004 also had its share of heartbreaks. Ashlee was caught lip syncing on "Saturday Night Live." Although it was later revealed that she had to use a backing track because she was losing her voice due to severe acid reflux, the reaction around the world was decidedly harsh. Shortly afterwards, Ashlee appeared at the Radio Music Awards where she pretended to have the same problem, but then continued to sing live, hoping to quiet some of her critics. However, her problems continued into January of 2005, when she appeared at the Orange Bowl Halftime show and was booed by a large portion of the crowd. Things began to pick up when Ashlee was named the year's "Fun Fearless Female of the Year" by Cosmopolitan magazine. She toured throughout the United States from February to April. She also appeared in the film "Undiscovered" which opened in August.
Ashlee's second album, "I am Me" was released on October 18, 2005. It reached #1 on the US charts. Two singles were released from the album, "Boyfriend" and "L.O.V.E." It sold three million copies worldwide. She said felt less pressure while working on this album, and wanted it to incorporate the rock and pop feel of "Autobiography." She also included an 80's influence in her songs as that time period had some of her favorite songs. Lyrically the album includes songs which touch on her tumultuous experiences since her last album was released. Ashlee went on tour at the end of 2005 promoting the album.
In 2006, Ashlee continued touring until July. Her L.O.V.E. tour included multiple costume changes and had Ashley Parker Angel as the opening act. After the tour ended, she took a break and started work on a third album. From September 25th to October 28th, she appeared as Roxie Hart in the London production of "Chicago." Reviews for her performance were almost unanimously positive. MTV's TRL awarded her the "Bounce Back" artist award. She also won two MTV Australia Video Music Awards for Best Female Artist and Best Pop Video for "Boyfriend."
When Ashlee first hit the public scene, she was dating Josh Henderson. She had dated him for two years, however, their relationship ended on the first episode of "The Ashlee Simpson Show." She then began to date Ryan Cabrera. She had been linked to Wilmer Valderrama, who some say she stole from Lindsay Lohan. Most recently she was said to be dating her bandmate Braxton Olita.
Ashlee has worked to change and maintain her style throughout the years. Shortly after the start of her reality show, she dyed her blonde hair black. She says that her fashion style is influenced by Gwen Stefani. Ashlee has three tattoos, two on her wrist and one on her ankle. She has gone back to a blonde look several times, even wearing long blonde hair extensions. She is often seen wearing black nail polish and toe nail polish. Ashlee is rumored to have had plastic surgery on her nose early in 2006. Although she has been asked about it in interviews, she has not admitted to it or denied it.
Ashlee is rumored to be working on her third album at the present time. She says that she would like the opportunity to work with Robert Smith from the Cure, who attended her last performance in Chicago.
