Jessica Simpson Last Saturday Night

Jessica Simpson's career is becoming a "Major Movie Star."

The singer and actress has signed a contract to play the leading role in the comedy Major Movie Star. The movie is about a down on her luck actress who wants to impress a producer and studio that she's perfect for their upcoming military-themed movie.

To win the leading role and prove them wrong, she joins the Marines. Sounds like a semi-remake of Private Benjamin to us. Jessica even has said she took the part because it's something Goldie Hawn would do.

According to producer Bill Gerber, who also produced The Dukes of Hazzard movie, he signed Jessica Simpson to star in this movie before The Dukes of Hazzard movie was released in 2005. Jessica's rep said, "She's excited to get back on a movie set and get into a new character." Her last released movie was Employee of the Month last year and she just filmed Blonde Ambition to be released this year. Simpson had been scheduled to begin filming "The Witness" in June. Apparently that has been pushed back as "Major Movie Star" will begin filming in Louisiana in June instead.

Until then Jessica's spending her time with John Mayer and will be hosting The Pussycat Dolls performance tonight in Las Vegas.
